Tāi xī (English spelling)

Japanese: 胎息 - たいそく（英語表記）tāi xī

A method of training in Chinese Taoism. According to the Baopuzi by Ge Hong of the Jin Dynasty, in order to become a sage, one must master three things: breathing techniques, the art of lovemaking, and medicine. Of these, breathing techniques (xingqi) are effective in curing illnesses, subduing snakes and tigers, quenching hunger and thirst, and extending lifespan. Prenatal breathing is the ultimate form of this breathing technique, and involves breathing without using the nose or mouth, just as a child does in the womb. The Book of the Later Han also teaches that the Taoist Wang Zhen achieved immortality by practicing prenatal breathing.

中国，道教の修行法の一つ。晋の葛洪（かつこう）の《抱朴子》によれば，仙人になるためには，呼吸法，房中術，服薬法の三つを心得る必要がある。このうち，呼吸法(行気)には疾病を治癒し，蛇虎を調伏し，飢渇を止め，寿命を延ばすなどの効用がある。胎息とは，この呼吸法の極致で，鼻や口を使わず，子供が胎内にいるときと同じように呼吸することであるという。また《後漢書》では，道士王真がこの胎息の実践により不老長生を得たと説く。
