A colorless liquid with a benzaldehyde-like odor. Melting point -13.2°C, boiling point 191.1°C. Solubility in water is 1% at 100°C. It can be mixed with alcohols and ethers in any ratio. It can be obtained by diazotizing aniline and reacting it with copper(I) cyanide (Sandmeyer reaction). It becomes benzoic acid when hydrolyzed.
