A village in Kitakanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 8,083 (1995). It is located on alluvial plain on the east bank of the downstream Agano River, and the settlement has developed in an arc shape on the natural levee of the Agano River. More than 90% of the cultivated land is paddy fields, and the village is centered on rice cultivation, but since it is 20 km from Niigata City on National Route 49, vegetable cultivation has also become popular in recent years, and the village is taking on the character of a suburban farming village. In 1964, an oil field was discovered in Kurose, and an oil plant was built by Teikoku Oil, but production of both crude oil and natural gas has been declining.
