Malingering - Malingering

The act of pretending to be sick when you are not actually sick in order to obtain illegal benefits. A similar word is "malingering," but malingering often refers to pretending to have a minor illness, such as faking a cold in order to miss work or school. Malingering, on the other hand, is more malicious and antisocial. For example, in insurance fraud, a person may slam on the brakes while driving a car to induce a rear-end collision, and even if the collision was only light, they may pretend to have severe whiplash symptoms in order to obtain a large amount of insurance money. People who commit murders and other crimes may feign mental illness by blurting out meaningless things and behaving strangely in order to receive a reduced sentence. In addition, even if it does not amount to a crime, a person who pretends to be depressed in order to refuse to work, obtains a doctor's certificate, and takes a long leave of absence is also a type of malingering.

実際には病気ではないのに病気を装うことで不正な利益を得ようとする行為。類義語に「仮病」があるが、仮病は、会社や学校を休むためにかぜを引いたふりをするなど、軽度の病気を装うことをさす場合が多い。これに対して詐病は、より悪質で反社会的なものを意味する。たとえば保険金詐欺では、自動車の運転中にあえて急ブレーキをかけるなどして追突を誘発し、軽く接触しただけであっても、むち打ちの症状を重篤なように装い、多額の保険金を得ようとする。殺人などを犯した者は意味不明なことを口走り、奇怪な行動をとることで精神疾患を装い、減刑をねらうことがある。また、犯罪に至らないまでも、就労を拒否するために、うつ病のふりをして医師の診断書を取得し、長期にわたって休職するような例も詐病の一種である。
