Yanaka

Japanese: 谷中 - やなか

A district in the northwest of Taito Ward, Tokyo. It was named after the valley between Ueno and Komagome. It appears as a village name in the Odawara Shushoryoyakucho (Odawara Shushoryoyakucho), Edo Kozu (Edo Old Map), and the Shinpen Musashi no Kuni Fudoki (New Musashi no Kuni Fudoki Ko). In addition to Tennoji (formerly Kannoji), Zenkoji, Gyokurinji, Ichijoji, and Chomyoji were founded around the same time after Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the city. Temples were concentrated in Yanaka from the time of the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu to the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi, and the area was called "Yanaka is a place of graves and fortune-telling," and the foundations of the temple town of Yanaka as it is today were built. Yanaka Cemetery is well maintained, and with rows of cherry trees, it is a great place to stroll.

東京都台東区(たいとうく)北西部の地区。上野と駒込(こまごめ)の間にある谷という意でよばれたという。『小田原衆所領役帳』に「屋中」、「江戸古図」、『新編武蔵国風土記(むさしのくにふどき)稿』に村名としてある。天王寺（旧、感応寺）のほか、徳川家康入府後、善光寺、玉林寺、一乗寺、長明寺などが前後して創建され、3代将軍家光(いえみつ)から5代綱吉(つなよし)の時代にかけて寺院が集中し「谷中は墓と富籤(とみくじ)」といわれ、現在の寺町谷中の基盤が築かれた。谷中霊園はよく整備され、サクラ並木もあって散策の地となっている。
