〘Noun〙 (also "amagawa") 1. In the Middle Ages, a covering for palanquins , oxcarts , palanquins , etc., used in rainy weather. Made from raw silk or thick paper coated with oil. ※Nishinomiyaki (c. 969) 17 "Amagawa: Nobles and higher ranks covered their carriages with them" 2. A raincoat made from thick paper coated with paulownia oil. Worn by mountain ascetics and the like. Oiled yutan . ※Noh play Ataka (c. 1516) "Amagawa shoulder box is attached to the top of the backpack ."
