A city in western Yemen. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,400 m at the northern foot of Mount Subur, about 210 km south of the capital Sana'a. It has a wall and five gates, and mosques and schools built in the 13th to 15th centuries remain. The Ayyubid dynasty, which conquered Yemen in 1173-74, made Taiz its capital, which continued until the 15th century. It was then under the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire until 1918, but the Zaydi imams often rebelled and occupied Taiz on several occasions. The agricultural products of the area are coffee, vegetables, and khat (a light narcotic drug), and the country's first waterworks were completed throughout the city in the 1960s. There is an aluminum household goods factory. It is a transportation hub where the East-West Highway to Muha on the Red Coast and the North-South Highway from Aden to Sana'a intersect, and there is also an international airport to the northeast of the city. Population 178,430 (1986). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
