Tadanori Ishiguro

A distinguished figure in the world of Japanese military medicine. Born into the Hirano family in Yanagawa, Date County, Mutsu Province (present-day Date City, Fukushima Prefecture), he inherited his ancestral Ishiguro family at the age of 16. In 1865 (Keio 1), he entered the Medical School and studied Western medicine. After the Meiji Restoration, he served at the University of Tokyo, and in 1870 (Meiji 3), he became a junior assistant professor at the university. The following year, in 1871, he took his first steps as a military doctor by serving at the Ministry of War's Military Medical Bureau, and in 1874 he fought in the Saga Rebellion as a first class army surgeon, and in 1877 he served as director of the Osaka Provisional Army Hospital during the Seinan War. In 1888, he became head of the Military Medical School, and in 1890 he became the Army Surgeon General and was appointed Director of the Medical Bureau of the Ministry of the Army. He served as Chief of the Field Medical Department during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and as an official at the Imperial Headquarters and in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) as an officer in the Army Quarantine Department, contributing to the care of wounded soldiers and ensuring wartime hygiene. In the early Meiji period, he made an effort to introduce Western medicine to various fields, and after becoming an army surgeon, he made a great contribution to establishing the foundations of the Japanese Army Medical Department. After retiring, he served as chairman of the Central Medical Association, president of the Japanese Red Cross Society, member of the House of Peers, and Privy Councilor. He also wrote essays and other books.

日本の軍医界の功労者。陸奥国(むつのくに)伊達(だて)郡梁川(やながわ)(現、福島県伊達市)の平野家に生まれ、16歳で祖家石黒家を継いだ。1865年(慶応1)医学所に入り、西洋医学を修めた。明治維新後、大学東校に出仕、1870年(明治3)大学少助教となった。翌1871年、兵部省(ひょうぶしょう)軍医寮に出仕して軍医としての第一歩を踏み出し、1874年佐賀の乱には陸軍一等軍医正として出陣、1877年西南戦争では大阪臨時陸軍病院長を務めた。1888年軍医学校長、1890年陸軍軍医総監となり、陸軍省医務局長に任ぜられた。日清戦争(にっしんせんそう)(1894~1895)では野戦衛生長官として、日露戦争(1904~1905)では大本営付兼陸軍検疫部御用掛として活躍し、傷病兵の救護、戦時衛生の確保に貢献した。明治初期において西洋医学を各方面に移植することに尽力し、陸軍軍医となってからは日本の陸軍衛生部の基礎の確立に功労が大きい。退職後、中央衛生会会長、日本赤十字社社長、貴族院議員、枢密顧問官などを歴任。随筆その他著書もある。
