...Due to the Irish problem, a chronic problem in British politics, the party was sometimes called the Unionist Party from the late 19th century to the 1920s. The Conservative Party was the name of the party in parliament, and the name of the external organization was the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations. The Conservative Party rarely publishes its membership numbers, but it is estimated that the number was around 1.2 million in the 1980s.
