Vicarious menstruation

It is periodic bleeding from outside the genitals that coincides with the menstrual cycle, and may be distinguished as replacement menstruation when it is accompanied by normal menstruation from the uterus. The most common type of bleeding is from the nasal mucosa (nosebleeds), accounting for approximately 30% of cases. The cause of nosebleeds is said to be that certain areas of the nasal mucosa are reactive to estrogen, a female hormone secreted from the ovaries, causing localized congestion or changes in blood vessels. Compensatory menstruation has been reported to include bleeding from a variety of sites, including the stomach, intestines, lungs, mammary glands, skin, umbilical fossa, external auditory canal, and eyelids.

性器外からの月経周期に一致した周期的な出血で，通常の子宮からの月経を伴う場合は補充月経として区別することもある。最も多くみられるのは鼻粘膜からの出血(鼻血)で，約30％を占める。この鼻血の原因は，鼻粘膜のある部位が卵巣から分泌される女性ホルモンであるエストロゲンに対し反応性をもち，局所的な充血あるいは血管の変化をきたすためと説明されている。代償月経として胃，腸，肺，乳腺，皮膚，臍窩（さいか），外耳道，眼瞼など多様な部位からの出血が報告されている。
