A port city located in the isthmus at the northeastern end of the Peloponnese Peninsula in southern Greece, at the head of the Gulf of Corinth. A center of industry and commerce, especially the trade of dried grapes. It prospered as a key point of land and sea transportation from around the 8th century BC, and in the 6th century BC became a powerful polis on par with Athens and Sparta, and is known for the Corinthian War and the Corinthian League. It was destroyed by Rome in 146 BC, but rebuilt in 44 BC. Paul wrote his Epistle to the Corinthians here. It gradually declined after the Middle Ages, and the old city that had existed since ancient times was destroyed in an earthquake in 1858, and a new city was built on the coast about 6 km northeast. Population: 29,787 (2001). → Related article Acropolis Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
