Daijuji Temple

This temple is located in Kamoda-cho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture. Its official name is Daiju-koji Temple. It is called Jodozan Shoan-in and belongs to the Chinzei school of the Jodo sect of Buddhism. It was founded in 1475 (Bunmei 7) by Matsudaira Chikatada, the lord of Okazaki Castle, and by Seiyogutei as the founder, in order to hold memorial services for those who died in battle. Since then, it has been a place of repose and prayer for the Matsudaira clan, and Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have often visited the temple. It houses the graves of eight Matsudaira generations, a wooden statue of Ieyasu, and life-size memorial tablets of past shoguns. Many of the buildings, such as the main hall, founder's hall, and mountain gate, were rebuilt at the end of the Tokugawa period, but the two-storied pagoda was built in 1535 (Tenbun 4) and is a National Important Cultural Property. The Daihojo is home to the sliding screen paintings by Okada Tamechika (a National Important Cultural Property), as well as many other temple treasures that are aired out and put on display every year from August 16th to 18th.

It is the oldest structure within the temple, and is a good example of the style of the late Muromachi period. The roof was once thatched, but is now thatched with cypress bark.
