Seiryoji-style Buddha

Japanese: 清凉寺式釈迦 - せいりょうじしきしゃか
Seiryoji-style Buddha
This Buddhist statue imitates the style of the Shaka Nyorai statue at Seiryoji Temple. The original statue was made by Chōsen, who traveled to Song China, who had a copy of a Shaka Nyorai statue said to have come from India at Kaiyuan Temple in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, which he then brought back to Japan in 987. It was widely worshipped in India as the fundamental statue and a statue from the Three Kingdoms, and many copies were made during the Kamakura period. The statue's distinctive feature is the striking parallel robe patterns in the Gandhara style. Existing examples include the standing Shaka Nyorai statues at Saidaiji Temple and Toshodaiji Temple.
