Chogin - Chogin

Japanese:
Chogin - Chogin

Silver coins from the Edo period. Weighted currency. Sea cucumber-shaped and weighing around 40 momme (150 grams), but because it was not consistent, it was often combined with small pieces of silver to make a fixed amount and used in sealed envelopes. Chogin were minted in the Ginza district, and were stamped with the seals of "Joze," "Takara," and the image of Daikoku, and the sealed envelopes were stamped with the seal of the Joze or the seal of the money exchange shop. From 1601 (Keicho 6) until the end of the Edo period, 11 types of chogin were made. The best quality of these were Keicho silver and Kyoho silver, with a silver-copper ratio of 80:20, while the poorest quality Ansei silver was 13:87. From the mid-Edo period onwards, with the appearance of denomination coins such as 5 momme silver, then 2 shu silver, and 1 shu silver, the importance of the chogin as currency was lost.
