[1] 〘 noun 〙 Buddhist term. ① (meaning great teacher) A term used to respectfully refer to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and monks of great virtue. ※Kanchiin Hon Tang Yamato Jo Tosei Den (779) Yamato Jo〈Hoshin〉 "The great teacher, Enku, is like Enku , and the light shines on the eastern seas . " 〔Shibun Vinaya Gyojisho Suikojiki - vol. 1 , vol. 1〕② A posthumous title given by the Imperial Court to a high-ranking monk. It is usually given after death to commemorate a monk's great virtue. In China, it began in the Tang Dynasty, and in Japan, it was the first time in the 8th year of the Jogan era ( 866 ) that Saicho was given the title of "Dengyo Daishi" and Ennin was given the title of "Jikaku Daishi." There are also cases where a person of a certain sect uses the title of "Dengyo Daishi" to refer to me, regardless of their connection to the Imperial Court. For example, the Tendai sect's Kojo is called "Betto Daishi." ※Sandai Jitsuroku - January 14, 864 (6th year of the Jogan Era) "Mu-daruma, Ho-shi, Nan-gaku Tendai-san's Sixth Patriarch, Prince Shotoku, Gyoki, Hiei-san Daishi, and others gathered together" [Du Fu - Poem to the Shu Monk] ③ A place where a high priest called "Daishi" is worshipped as the principal image. The two Daishi of Ueno Kan'ei-ji Temple and Kawasaki Daishi are particularly famous. Daishi-sama. ※Haiku, Suewakaba (1697) Vol. 1 "I look at the beard of Daishi as if he were going out to buy a horse, the umbrella that holds Daishi's hair (mountain bee)" ④ An abbreviation of "Daishikou (Daishi lecture) ①". ※Haiku, Shinshin (1705) "Two, three flies on Daishi's rice porridge" [2] Refers to Kobo Daishi. ※Eika (around 1028-1092) Utagai "When he went to Koyasan, he was able to see the state of the Great Master entering into nirvana."
