[1] 〘 noun 〙 Buddhist term. ① (meaning great teacher) A term used to respectfully refer to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and monks of great virtue. ※Kanchiin Hon Tang Yamato Jo Tosei Den (779) Yamato Jo〈Hoshin〉 "The great teacher, Enku, is like _Enku , and the light _shines _{on the eastern seas} _. " 〔Shibun Vinaya Gyojisho Suikojiki - vol. ₁ , vol. 1〕② A posthumous title given by the Imperial Court to a high-ranking monk. It is usually given after death to commemorate a monk's great virtue. In China, it began in the Tang Dynasty, and in Japan, it was the first time in the 8th year of the Jogan era ( 866 ) that Saicho was given the title of "Dengyo Daishi" and Ennin was given the title of "Jikaku Daishi." There are also cases where a person of a certain sect uses the title of "Dengyo Daishi" to refer to me, regardless of their connection to the Imperial Court.
