Vice Provincial of the Society of Jesus. Born in Antequera, Spain. Joined the Society of Jesus in 1553. Studied at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, and later became a professor of philosophy and theology. Arrived in Macau in 1581 via India. Arrived in Japan on June 7, 1583. Appointed Vice Provincial of Japan in 1583, he completed three works in Latin, "De Celestial Spheres," "De Soul," and "Institute of Catholic Doctrine," as textbooks for the Collegio (college). Of these, "De Celestial Spheres" was the first work to introduce Western science and convey the Aristotelian worldview to Japan. He also assisted Spanish mendicant monks who came to Japan from Manila, helping them in their missionary work. イエズス会準管区長。スペインのアンテケラ生まれ。1553年イエズス会に入会。ポルトガルのコインブラ大学に学び,のちに哲学と神学の教授となる。インドを経て1581年マカオに到着。天正11(1583)年6月7日来日。同18年,日本準管区長に就任し,文禄2(1593)年,コレジョ(学院)における教科書として,『天球論』『霊魂論』『カトリック教理要綱』の3部からなる著作をラテン語で完成した。このうち『天球論』は,西洋科学を紹介し日本にアリストテレス的世界観を伝えた最初の著作である。一方,マニラから来日したスペイン系托鉢修道会修道士に援助を与え布教を助けた。長崎で死去。<著作>尾原悟訳「ペドロ・ゴメス著『天球論』(試訳)」(『キリシタン研究』1965年10号)<参考文献>尾原悟「キリシタン時代の科学思想―ペドロ・ゴメス著『天球論』の研究―」,伊東俊太郎「アリストテレスと日本―我が国における西欧的世界像の最初の受容―」(『(東京大学)教養学科紀要』1967年1号)
