...A wide range of people participated in the rebellion, regardless of their social status or origin, and the Mahdist state, supported by Sudanese national consciousness, continued for 13 years. Members of the Mahdist sect, the religious organization organized by the Mahdi, called themselves Ansar (supporters) and were at the core of the rebellion.
