Ansar (English spelling)

...A wide range of people participated in the rebellion, regardless of their social status or origin, and the Mahdist state, supported by Sudanese national consciousness, continued for 13 years. Members of the Mahdist sect, the religious organization organized by the Mahdi, called themselves Ansar (supporters) and were at the core of the rebellion. The Mahdi maintained absolute equality in order to realize Sharia, but after the death of Muhammad Ahmad (1885), internal contradictions in the rebellion came to the surface, and it was put down by the British-Egyptian allied forces in 1898.
