Kawaguchi-so

Japanese: 河口荘 - かわぐちのしょう
Kawaguchi-so
A manor in Sakai County, Echizen Province. It is believed to have spread to what is now Awara City and Sakai City in Fukui Prefecture, and was the property of Kofuku-ji Temple (Kasuga Taisha Shrine) in Nara. It consisted of 10 districts, including Hyogo-go, which had the water rights for the Jugo Irrigation Canal, which drew water from the Kuzuryu River, and is often collectively referred to as Kawaguchi Tsuboe-sho, together with the neighboring Tsuboe-go, which was owned by the temple. The date of its establishment is unknown, but in the late Heian period it was inherited as the Kasuga Shrine's all-sutra repository. After 1229, it was off-limits to the shugo, and after 1285, it was held by the head priest of Daijo-in Temple, Kofuku-ji Temple. In the late Kamakura period, it had a land area of over 1,167 cho, and about 240 cho of land was exempt from tax, making it the largest manor of the temple outside Yamato Province. Manor officials such as Kumon and Mandokoro were placed on the site, and powerful samurai such as the Horie and Kai clans were assigned to it. After the Onin War, the Asakura clan took over, but after the Asakura clan's demise, the control of Kofuku-ji Temple became a mere formality. → Tsuboe Manor → Related Article Hosoroki-go
