[Indirect coal liquefaction]
This is a method in which coal is first gasified and converted into a synthesis gas consisting of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and then a reaction takes place over a catalyst to synthesize hydrocarbon oil. This principle was discovered in the early 1920s by F. Fischer and H. Tropsch of Germany, and is therefore called the Fischer-Tropsch process (F-T process) or simply the Fischer process (Fischer synthesis). This process is still carried out on an industrial scale by Sasol in the Republic of South Africa, and although the liquid fuel produced is mainly paraffinic hydrocarbons, which are suitable for diesel fuel, the gasoline fraction has the disadvantage of having a low octane number when left as is.
