Son Pyŏng-hi (English spelling)

Japanese: 孫秉熙 - そんへいき（英語表記）Son Pyŏng‐hǔi

1861‐1922
The founder of Cheondogyo in Korea and one of the leaders of the March 1st Independence Movement. His pen name was Uiam. He was from Cheongju, South Chungcheong Province. He participated in the Gabo Peasant War of 1894, and after Choi Sihyeong was executed in 1898, he became the third head of Donghak. He defected to Japan and did his best to revive Donghak, but when Yi Yong-gu and others formed the Iljinhoe based on Donghak and cooperated with the Japanese army during the Russo-Japanese War, he opposed this and renamed Donghak Cheondogyo. He returned to Korea the following year and established the religious organization. In 1907, he retired as head and engaged in enlightenment activities by running schools and training centers, and worked to expand the influence of the religion under Japanese colonial rule.

朝鮮の天道教の創始者で，三･一独立運動の指導者の一人。号は義庵。忠清南道清州の人。1894年の甲午農民戦争に参加し，98年に崔時亨（さいじこう）が刑死したあと東学の第3代教主となる。日本へ亡命し東学再興に意を尽くしたが，日露戦争の際李容九らが東学を基盤に一進会を組織して日本軍に協力すると，これに反対して東学を天道教と改称，翌年帰国して教団を整備･確立した。1907年には教主を退き，学校や講習所を経営して啓蒙活動にあたり，日本の植民地支配下で教勢の拡大につとめた。
