Toyo Keizai Shinpo - Toyo Keizai Shinpo

Toyo Keizai Shinpo - Toyo Keizai Shinpo

A financial and economic magazine. It was founded in 1895 (Meiji 28) by Machida Chuji, who was in London at the time the Sino-Japanese War broke out, modelled on The Economist and The Statist magazines. It was initially published monthly, but became a weekly magazine from 1919 (Taisho 8). After Machida, Amano Tameyuki, Uematsu Hisaaki, Miura Tetsutaro and others became editors in chief. In its early days, it was praised alongside Taguchi Ukichi's Tokyo Keizai Zasshi, and was a lively publication with the aim of nurturing industrial capital, advocating open-door policies and free trade, and at times even advocating a civil service system for the Ministers of the Army and Navy in response to the tyranny of the military. Its liberal stance was continued by Ishibashi Tanzan, who served as editor-in-chief from 1925 to 1946, and he wrote a number of noteworthy articles, such as the debate over lifting the gold embargo and "What can we learn from Germany's rebellion?" in response to the signing of the German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact in 1939. There is an anecdote about the latter, in which Iwanami Shigeo circulated an excerpt from it. The title was changed to "Weekly Toyo Keizai" from the special New Year's issue in 1986.
