1890‐1947 A leader of modern Buddhist reform in China. His real name was Lu, and his given name was Kansen. He was from Chongde County, Zhejiang Province. He became a monk at the age of 16, and was ordained under the monk Ji Zen of the Tenryu Temple in Ningbo. He was deeply impressed by the works of the reformists in the late Qing Dynasty and aspired to save the country with Buddhism. He later had contact with the revolutionaries, and in 1912 he organized the China Buddhist Association in Nanjing. In 1914, he retreated to the Xilin Zen Temple in Putuo Mountain and studied the eight schools of Buddhism - Tiantai, Huayan, Hosso, Zen, Vinaya, Pure Land, Esoteric, and Sanron - and came to believe in the equality of all eight schools. In 1917, he organized the Jakusha Society with lay Buddhists such as Zhang Binglin, and published the monthly Jakusha Series (later renamed Kaichoyin).
