Hohmann, W.

...A transfer orbit that minimizes the total change in velocity that must be imparted to a spacecraft when transferring from one circular orbit to another in the same plane, i.e., the amount of energy required. It is named after its inventor, the German Walter Hohmann (1880-1945). In practice, a two-impulse orbit that changes velocity twice, once when leaving the initial orbit and once when reaching the target orbit, minimizes the required velocity (however, depending on the ratio of the transfer orbits, a three-impulse transfer may be optimal), and all of these are called Hohmann-type transfers.
