Mount Oakan - Mount Oakan

Japanese: 雄阿寒岳 - おあかんだけ
Mount Oakan - Mount Oakan

A cone-shaped volcano in the northern part of the Kushiro Regional Subprefectural Bureau in eastern Hokkaido. Its elevation is 1,370 meters. The name of the mountain comes from the Ainu word "Pinneshiri" (Mt. Oyama). It is a central crater cone that was formed inside the Akan Caldera after it collapsed, and is composed of andesite and pyroclastic materials that form a stratovolcano. Lakes Akan, Panketo, and Penketo are found within the caldera around the foot of the mountain. The vegetation is a mixed forest of Ezo spruce, Todo fir, white birch, and Mizunara oak below 500 meters above sea level, a coniferous forest of Ezo spruce and Todo fir from 500 to 1,000 meters, a broadleaf forest of Erman's birch from 1,000 to 1,200 meters, and an alpine plant zone of Pumila and other trees above 1,200 meters. It is a scenic spot in Akan Mashu National Park, and the mountain can be seen from the shores of Lake Akan and Sogakudai on the Akan Cross-Akan Road.
