A folk art form. A type of Kagura. Arose in the early modern period with the rise of pilgrimages to Ise Shrine, and is a lion dance performed by two people (one leading the other as a tail), who travel around the country dancing the lion as a purification and exorcism for substitute pilgrimages and giving out sacred talismans. It was originally written as Dai Kagura, meaning substitute pilgrimage, but later came to use the honorific "Ta", as in the writings Kotai Jingu and Taichi. In recent years it has also been written as Dai Kagura. It is classified as Shishi Kagura, but in addition to simply dancing the lion, dancers also performed acrobatics as entertainment from early on, and eventually some dancers made acrobatics their main art.
