An old town in Oku District, southeastern Okayama Prefecture. The main settlements were Kazemachi Port and Shiomachi Port, on the former Western Sea Route to Maejima across the Ushimado Strait, and prospered through the shipping of locally produced Bizen ware, salt, and timber distribution. It is one of the prefecture's leading vegetable producing areas, and also raises livestock and cultivates olives. Nori and oyster farming is thriving. 岡山県南東部,邑久(おく)郡の旧町。主集落は牛窓瀬戸を隔てて前島に対するかつての西国航路の風待港,潮待港で,地元産の備前焼,塩などの積出し,木材集散で栄えた。県下有数の蔬菜産地で,畜産,オリーブの栽培も行う。ノリ・カキの養殖が盛ん。2004年11月邑久郡邑久町,長船町と合併し市制,瀬戸内市となる。27.50km2。7792人(2003)。→牛窓津
