A deciduous tall tree of the Fagaceae family that grows in the mountains and fields of East Asia and throughout Japan. It often grows in colonies on sunny coasts and gravelly areas on hills. The bark is gray-brown to blackish brown with irregular vertical cracks. The leaves are clustered alternately at the ends of the branches, obovate and densely covered with soft hairs, with wavy, blunt sawtooth edges. It is monoecious and blooms in the spring. The fruit is a spherical acorn. Tannin is extracted from the bark and the wood is used for tools, building materials, or charcoal, and the leaves are used for kashiwamochi (rice cakes). 日本全土,東アジアの山野にはえるブナ科の落葉高木。日当りのよい海岸や丘陵の礫地(れきち)に群生することが多い。樹皮は灰褐色〜黒褐色,縦方向の不規則な割れ目がある。葉は枝先に集まって互生し,倒卵形で軟毛が密生,縁には波状の鈍い鋸歯(きょし)がある。雌雄同株で春に開花する。果実は球形のどんぐり。樹皮からタンニンをとり,材は器具,建材,または木炭に,葉は柏餅(もち)に用いる。
