Niemeyer, AH (English spelling)

…German Protestant theologian and pedagogue. Great-grandson of theologian AH Franke. He studied theology at the University of Halle, where he taught pedagogy as a full professor of theology from 1784 and served as rector from 1807 to 1815. He also continued his great-grandfather's work as director of the Franke School from 1799 onwards. His major pedagogical work, Principles of Education and Instruction for Parents, Tutors and Educators (1796), is an eclectic compilation of the representative views on education at the time (Rousseau, the Philanthropists, Kant, etc.), and is regarded as the first attempt at a systematic educational theory in Germany, and had a major influence on JF Herbart. …
