Graphite has a wide range of uses, so industrially produced artificial graphite is currently used. In 1896, American EG Acheson investigated a furnace used to manufacture silicon carbide (SiC) and discovered that SiC decomposed into graphite in the hottest part of the furnace, and came up with the idea of producing artificial graphite using an electric arc furnace.
