Ishikari River

Japanese:
Ishikari River
A river that flows through the center of Hokkaido and empties into the Sea of Japan. It is 268 km long. As the Ainu name Ishikaribetsu (meaning a very winding river) indicates, it is a very meandering river. It was once the second longest river in Japan at 365 km long, but was recently shortened by renovating the meandering course. Its source is Mount Ishikari, and it flows through the Sounkyo gorge into the Kamikawa Basin, joining tributaries such as the Chubetu River and Biei River in Asahikawa City. It flows westward through the horizontal valley of Kamuikotan, exits the Sorachi lowlands, joins the Uryu River from the north, flows southward to join the Sorachi River in Takikawa City, the Yubari River in Ebetsu City, and the Toyohira River north of Sapporo City, and flows northwestward to Ishikari Bay. During the snowmelt season, it often floods and creates a meandering belt with a maximum width of 16 km. Numerous oxbow lakes and wetlands are formed in the old meandering course. As a major transportation and agricultural artery for the Ishikari Plain, it was used for water transport from the beginning of its development, but its value decreased after the construction of the railway line. River improvement works and land improvement projects on both banks were carried out over a period of about half a century from the 1910s, and rice paddy areas were created in the Ishikari River basin, making it Hokkaido's number one rice-producing area. More than 40 hydroelectric power plants on the main tributaries are the backbone of the economy, and the abundant river water is used for agricultural, industrial and drinking water. Salmon fishing at the river's mouth is currently in decline due to overfishing and the inflow of pesticides and urban sewage.
