A gold coin used from the late Roman Empire to the Byzantine Empire. It was established as 1/72 of a Roman pound (4.55g) by Emperor Constantine's monetary reform. It was a real gold coin that theoretically remained unchanged until the time of the fall of Constantinople in 1453, and because the gold standard was maintained by repeated legal restrictions on its net weight and fineness, it enjoyed high currency in international trade in the Mediterranean. The current dollar symbol, $, comes from the solidus. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
