Solid South

In the United States, southern states showed support and loyalty to the opposing Democratic party due to opposition to the Southern Reconstruction Plan led by the radical Republican Party after the Civil War and to the unity between blacks and the Republican Party. The term was popularized by J.S. Mosby, who supported Republican candidate R.B. Hayes during the 1876 presidential election, as an attack on the Democratic Party, and in fact, all of the electoral votes of the 11 former Confederate states were cast for the Democratic Party in presidential elections from 1876 to 1916. However, since 1920, and especially since 1952, there has been a noticeable phenomenon of conservative Republicans stealing votes from the Democratic Party, even in the South.
