Ishigakecho - Ishigakecho

Japanese:
Ishigakecho - Ishigakecho

This butterfly belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae. It is found in Kinki (Kii Peninsula), the Chugoku region and south, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Nansei Islands, and is distributed overseas from Taiwan, southern China, to the Himalayas. It has a wing span of about 45 mm and a distinctive feature of a complex map-like pattern on a white or pale yellow background, and is also called Ishigakicho. No similar species with this characteristic is found in Japan, Taiwan, or China. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the pattern on its wings resembles a stone cliff or stone wall. It overwinter as an adult, and in spring it lays eggs on the new shoots of its food plants, repeating this process two or three times by autumn. The food plants for its larvae are plants of the Mulberry family, such as the dogwood, fig, banyan, Chinese laurel, and rubber tree.
