Born: circa 1552, London
[Died] November 23, 1616. London. British author. After graduating from Oxford University, he became interested in the deeds of early navigators, and wrote The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffics and Discoveries of the English Nation (1589, revised and expanded in 3 volumes, 1598-1600), which greatly inspired navigators of the time and left a valuable document for posterity. In 1846, the Hakluyt Society was founded in his honor, and continues to publish the series of voyages.

イギリスの著述家。オックスフォード大学を出てから初期航海者の事跡に興味をいだき，『イギリス国民の主要航海記』 The Principal Navigations，Voyages，Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation (1589，増補改訂3巻，98～1600) を著わし，当時の航海者に大きな刺激を与え，後世に貴重な資料を残した。なお彼にちなんで，1846年「ハクルート協会」が設立され，航海記叢書の刊行が続けられている。
