Honma Yusei

Year of birth: 1776
A poet and scholar of Japanese classics from the late Edo period. His pen name was Shiryu, and his pen names were Kyue, Minun, and Shokanshi. One theory is that he died at the age of 70, but there are also various different theories about the date of his death. He was a doctor for the Yoshida domain of Iyo (Ehime Prefecture) (stationed in Edo). He studied under Murata Shunkai and was highly regarded as a poet. His works include Kyue Eiso and others. However, when it comes to Yusei's major work, the first to come to mind is Mimitoshigawa. It is a treasure trove of information about the world of Japanese classics in Edo in the late early modern period, and a handwritten manuscript was presented to the Date family, the lord of the Uwajima domain. Unfortunately, this has not been handed down to the present day, and we only know it through partial copies. The unclear biography of Yusei is largely due to the loss of his major works.

江戸後期の歌人,国学者。字は士竜,号九江,眠雲,消閑子など。享年70歳説あり,没日も種々の異説がある。伊予(愛媛県)吉田藩医(江戸詰)。村田春海に師事し,歌人として高く評価された。『九江詠草』その他がある。しかし游清の主著となると,まず『耳敏川』に指を屈すべきである。近世後期の江戸国学界に関する情報の宝庫で,宇和島藩主伊達家に自筆稿本が献上されていたが,現在は伝わらず,一部を写本で知るのみとなったのは遺憾である。游清の伝の不明瞭さも主著の散逸によるところが大きい。
