Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth

An American painter, he is widely popular for his precise realism in portraits and landscapes. Born in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Wyeth was the son of the famous illustrator Newell C. Convers Wyeth (1882-1945), and was taught by his father from an early age. He started out painting with watercolors, but his tempera painting "Christina's World" in 1948 garnered attention and was added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York that same year. His series of paintings, which feature the Kerner family of Chadds Ford and the Olson siblings of Cushing, Maine as motifs, are highly regarded as a prime example of radical realism. Wyeth has consistently pursued thorough realism in tempera and dry brush paintings, and his theme is the drama of human life and death set in the American countryside. In 1976, he became the first living American painter to have his work retrospectived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1986, the Helga Series, which he created between 1970 and 1985 using a single woman as a model, was released and caused a stir. His second son, James Wyeth (1946- ), is also a painter, and his style is similar to that of his father, Andrew. In his hometown of Chadds Ford, there is the Brandywine River Museum of Art, which could be considered a Wyeth museum. In 2007, he was awarded the Medal of Honor from the US government.
