Italian architect. Date of birth and death unknown. He was a foreign employee who came to Japan in 1876 on the recommendation of the Italian Ministry of Education when the Kobu Bijutsu Gakko was opened as Japan's first institution for art education. He was in charge of drawing at the school. He later moved to the Maintenance Bureau and then to the Army, where he designed the Yushukan (1881) in the style of a medieval European castle, and the Army General Staff Headquarters (around 1881) in the Renaissance style, introducing authentic architectural style to Japan for the first time. He traveled to the United States in 1885, and died a few years later in San Francisco. [Yamaguchi Hiroshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
