A corridor between a zashiki room and a veranda. Its predecessor was a eaves around the main house of a shinden-zukuri style house, and there was a veranda made of straw mats on the outside of the eaves. Later, in shoin-zukuri style houses, it was called a hiro-en. In the early Edo period, shutters were developed, and it became a completely inner room. With tatami mats laid on it, it was called an enzashiki room, or also called iri-wa. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
