Legends surrounding Holy Roman Emperors Frederick II and I. In times of crisis, any society may desire to return to a past golden age, and in the Middle Ages in Europe, the desire for a final emperor was born in the mid-13th century, when Joachim de Floris predicted the end of the world. When the St. Joseph emperor Frederick II died (1250), many did not believe in his death, partly because a prophetess had predicted that "the emperor is alive but not alive," and it was believed that the emperor had retired to Mount Etna.
