Tomariura

Japanese: 泊浦 - とまりのうら

Currently Toba City, Mie Prefecture. Located at the northern end of Shima Province, on the border with Ise Province. Since the early modern period, it has been called "Tobaura", but before the Middle Ages, it was written as "Tomariura" and was probably pronounced "Toba no Ura" by a corrupted version. Located between two difficult sea routes, the Kumano Nada and the Enshu Nada, it has many inlets and outlets along the coastline, and is a good natural harbor surrounded by islands of all sizes. It has been a place of anchorage for ships since ancient times, and it is thought that the name Tomariura originated from this. In ancient times, it was called Tomariura Mikuriya, and was the property of the Inner Shrine of Ise.

現在の三重県鳥羽市。志摩国の北端，伊勢国との国境に位置した。近世以降の〈鳥羽浦〉に当たるが，中世以前は〈泊浦〉と書き〈とまりのうら〉，それがなまって〈とばのうら〉といわれるようになったのであろう。熊野灘と遠州灘という二つの海上交通の難所の間に位置し，しかも海岸線の出入りが多く，大小の島に囲まれた天然の良港であるため，古くから船舶の寄泊地となっていて，そこから泊浦の名がおこったと考えられている。古代には泊浦御厨とよばれ，伊勢内宮の所領であった。
