Acrylic resin - Acrylic resin

A typical type of plastic. It is the general name for polymers made from esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. A typical example is the polymer of methyl methacrylate CH ₂ =C(CH ₃ )CO ₂ CH ₃ (methyl methacrylate, abbreviated as MMA), which is generally known as one of the "organic glasses." It is made from acetone CH ₃ COCH ₃ , hydrocyanic acid HCN, and methanol CH ₃ OH. Its specific gravity is 1.18. It is a highly transparent plastic that transmits light, especially ultraviolet light, more easily than ordinary glass. It is stable and has good light resistance (it does not fade or deteriorate when exposed to light). There is another plastic with a similar high transparency, polystyrene, but unlike polystyrene, it is easy to work with by heating and bending it. It has excellent weather resistance, electrical insulation, and water resistance, and can be compression molded at temperatures above 150°C. It can also be poured into a mold to create transparent castings. It is used in many applications, including as windshields for aircraft and automobiles, mixed with titanium white to make white lighting covers, and as a building material. It is more transparent than glass, weighs about half the weight of glass, and is easy to work with, but has the disadvantage of being prone to scratches and dust due to its low hardness. As a medical material, most contact lenses and dentures are made from this resin. In addition, various acrylic resin modified paints are used in automobiles as paint resins.

There are also polymers and copolymers of acrylic acid and its methyl and ethyl esters. Polymers of acrylic acid methyl ester, _CH2 = _CHCOOCH3 , are used in adhesives, paints, and resin finishing of textiles to increase abrasion resistance and to give them a matte finish. The sodium salt of acrylic acid polymer is a water-soluble polyelectrolyte. It hardens when acid is added, but dissolves if shaken well. It has an extremely high viscosity. In cosmetics, it is used as a base material for hair lotions and pomades. The calcium salt can also be used as a soil conditioner.

代表的なプラスチックの一種。アクリル酸やメタアクリル酸などのエステルからの重合体の一般名である。その代表的なものはメタクリル酸メチルエステルCH₂=C(CH₃)CO₂CH₃（メタクリル酸メチル、略称MMA）の重合体で、一般には「有機ガラス」の一つとして知られている。アセトンCH₃COCH₃とシアン化水素酸（青酸）HCNとメタノール（メチルアルコール）CH₃OHを原料としている。比重1.18。透明性のよいプラスチックで、光とくに紫外線を普通のガラスよりも通しやすい。安定で耐光性もよい（光の照射によって退色したり品質を劣化させない）。同様に透明性の高いプラスチックとしてポリスチレンがあるが、それとは異なり、温めて曲げたりする細工がしやすい。耐候性、電気絶縁性、耐水性ともに優れ、150℃以上で圧縮成形もできる。また型に注入して透明な注型品をつくることもできる。航空機、自動車の風防ガラスとして、またチタン白(はく)（チタンホワイト）を混入して白色の照明器具のカバー、建築材料など多方面に使われている。ガラス以上の透明性をもち、ガラスの重さの約半分で、加工性も優れている反面、硬度が小さいので擦(す)り傷、ほこりがつきやすい欠点がある。医療用材料としてはコンタクトレンズと義歯のほとんどがこの樹脂でつくられている。さらに塗料用樹脂としていろいろのアクリル樹脂変性塗料が自動車に使われている。

　またアクリル酸やそのメチルエステルやエチルエステルの重合物や共重合物がある。アクリル酸メチルエステルCH₂=CHCOOCH₃の重合物は接着剤や塗料、織物の樹脂加工用として耐摩擦強度の増加、つや消しとして使われている。アクリル酸の重合体のナトリウム塩は水溶性高分子電解質である。酸を加えると一度固まるが、よく振り動かせば溶解する。きわめて粘度が高い。化粧品用としてヘアローション、ポマードなどの基材となる。また、このカルシウム塩は土壌改良剤になる。
