Japanese: 毛野 - けぬ

It can also be read as "Keno". In ancient times, this area name is thought to have referred to the whole of Gunma Prefecture and the southern part of Tochigi Prefecture. The Kokuzo Hongi states that "Keno Province" was divided into upper and lower during the reign of Emperor Nintoku. Based on the distribution of ancient tombs, the area was centered around Ota Tenjinyama Tomb (Ota City, Gunma Prefecture) in the 5th century, but it appears to have been demolished. The Kamitomono clan and Shimotomono clan, whose names are taken from the place, have a tradition that their ancestor was Toyokiirihiko no Mikoto, the son of Emperor Sujin, and they appear to have been incorporated into the central national structure.

〈けの〉とも読む。古代，群馬県全域と栃木県南部を指したとみられる地域名。《国造本紀(こくぞうほんぎ)》に仁徳(にんとく)天皇の代に〈毛野国〉を上・下に分けたとある。古墳の分布状況などから，５世紀には太田天神山(おおたてんじんやま)古墳（群馬県太田市）周辺が中心地であったが，それが解体したようである。地名を冠した上毛野氏・下毛野氏は崇神(すじん)天皇皇子豊城入彦命(とよきいりひこのみこと)を始祖とする伝承を伝えており，中央の国家機構の中に組み込まれていたようである。
