Also called a caterpillar track. A running device in which tracks made of steel plates connected in an endless loop like a chain are attached around the wheels. It is said to have first been used in the United States on tractors in 1904. The wheels move the tracks, but the contact area with the ground is large, so the load per unit area is small and the adhesion is strong. This allows it to easily traverse steep slopes, wetlands, and uneven roads. It is widely used in construction machinery and combat vehicles such as tanks.

無限軌道とも。鋼板を鎖のように無端環状に接続した履帯を，車輪の周囲に取り付けた走行装置。1904年に米国でトラクターに使用されたのが実用の最初とされる。車輪で履帯を動かして走るが，地面との接触面積が大きく，単位面積当りの荷重が小さくなり，粘着力は大きい。このため急坂路，湿地帯，凹凸路などを容易に通過できる。建設機械や戦車をはじめとする戦闘車両に多用されている。
