A village in Uda County, eastern Nara Prefecture. Population 2,645 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Shorenji River, a tributary of the Nabari River. Most of the village area is mountainous terrain made of andesite from the Muro volcanic group, and the valley of the Shorenji River creates a scenic spot called Oku-Korachi Valley, which is opposite the downstream Kochidani Valley. It is home to the natural monuments Byobuiwa, Kabutoiwa, and Yoroiwa, and has been designated as part of the Muro-Akame Aoyama Quasi-National Park. The settlement spreads out in a strip-like shape in a small basin on both sides of the Shorenji River, and in the Middle Ages it flourished as a transportation hub on the Ise Honkaido Road. 奈良県東部,宇陀郡の村。人口2645(1995)。名張川支流の青蓮寺(しようれんじ)川上流域を占める。村域の大半は室生火山群の安山岩からなる山地で,青蓮寺川の渓谷は下流の香落渓(こおちだに)に対し奥香落渓といわれる景勝地をつくり,天然記念物の屛風岩,兜岩,鎧岩があって室生赤目青山国定公園に指定されている。青蓮寺川両岸の小盆地に帯状に集落が広がり,中世には伊勢本街道の交通の要地として栄えた。林業が盛んで杉,ヒノキの良材を産し,みがき丸太の製造が行われる。
