It has long been famous as a hot spring area, and since the Meiji period, it has developed due to the development of transportation and the success of hot spring drilling by Kazusabori, and various hot spring treatment facilities have been established, making it one of Japan's leading hot spring cities. Hot springs flow from the city area to the foot of Mount Tsurumi, and the main hot springs are the so-called Beppu Eight Hot Springs: Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Hotta, Myoban, Kannawa, Shibaishi, and Kamegawa. The springs are of various types, such as iron carbonate springs, simple springs, and weak saline springs, and the temperature is 28°C. There is an abundance of hot spring water, and it is used by ordinary households. There are many hells and swimming beaches, as well as an aquarium, an amusement park, the Kyoto University Geophysical Research Facility, and the Kyushu University Institute of Balneotherapy. 大分県中部，別府湾に臨む市。1924年市制。古くから有名な温泉地で，明治以後は交通の発達，上総(かずさ)掘による温泉掘削の成功により発展，各種の温泉療養施設もでき日本有数の温泉都市となった。温泉は市街地から鶴見岳山麓にわき，中心は別府，浜脇，観海寺，堀田，明礬(みょうばん)，鉄輪(かんなわ)，柴石，亀川のいわゆる別府八湯で，泉質は炭酸鉄泉，単純泉，弱食塩泉など多種，28℃。湯量も豊富で一般家庭も利用。多くの地獄や海水浴場をはじめ，水族館，遊園地，京大地球物理学研究施設，九大温泉治療学研究所がある。日豊本線，大分自動車道，阪神，広島から瀬戸内海航路が通じ，九州観光の玄関口をなす。125.34km²。12万5385人（2010）。
