One of the representative forms of Korean hall worship, Sonandan is a sacred tree covered with white paper or pieces of five-colored silk cloth and a pile of pebbles beneath it, which is generally found at mountain passes, at the entrance and borders of villages, and on roadsides at the foot of mountains. In Chinese characters, it is written as 城隍堂 or 垂石丹. The character 城隍 has been found in documents since the Goryeo period, but it was originally the god of Chinese city walls and the moats surrounding them, and later became the god in charge of peace within the area of the city. In Korea, this Chinese worship of the City God was first accepted at the official level, and was then syncretized with the worship of the mountain god, the guardian deity of the indigenous village, to give birth to the unique Korean worship of the City God.
