After dropping out of middle school, he worked at various jobs, including as a postman, but was recognized for his short story, “The Bold Young Man on the Trapeze” (1934), which depicted the consciousness of a poor literary youth in a style that mixed realism and fantasy. After that, he published a series of plays, novels, and short stories, and in 1939, his play “My Heart is on the Plateau” became a hit on Broadway, and in the same year, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for “When You’re My Life,” but he refused to accept it the following year. …
