Calcar, JS (English)

This book, which Vesalius, professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Padua in Italy, created with the help of the painter JS Calcar (1499-1546/50), contains magnificent anatomical illustrations that unify art and science. It is a systematic anatomical book consisting of seven parts: (1) bones and joints, (2) muscles, (3) vascular system, (4) nerves, (5) abdominal organs, (6) heart and lungs, and (7) brain. It contains many findings that significantly correct the Galenic anatomy that had been believed and considered orthodox until then. As a result, it faced a fierce counterattack from orthodox medical doctors of the time who clung to tradition, and Vesalius's status as a heretic was put in jeopardy. …
