…Narrow woven fabrics with raw silk in the warp and gold thread in the weft were used for epaulettes, and are also called “moulds.” There are two types of moulds: (1) is a decorative thread similar to chenille yarn, and is made by warping three or four warp threads in a set at intervals, then weaving the fabric in a normal plain weave, and then cutting the middle of each set (the part where the warp threads were not warped) vertically and twisting it. (2) is made by wrapping a tightly twisted thread around a core of loosely twisted yarn. Silk threads were used for epaulettes, while linen threads and silk and cotton blends were used for hats and other decorative threads. …
