Roman historian of the Imperial period. Born in Nicaea in Asia Minor, he became a senator under the reign of Emperor Commodus. During the Severan dynasty, he was appointed praetor in 194 and consul in 205 and 229. During that time, he served as governor of the province of Africa and governor of the provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He wrote in Greek, beginning with a work on the dreams and omens of Emperor Septimius Severus during the reign of the latter. While writing a work on the civil war of 193, he expanded his project to include a History of Rome, covering the period from the founding of Rome to 229.

ローマ帝政期の歴史家。小アジアのニカエアに生まれ，コンモドゥス帝治下に元老院議員となる。セウェルス朝期には，194年法務官(プラエトル)に就任し，205年および229年に執政官(コンスル)職にあった。その間，属州アフリカの総督，属州ダルマティアおよびパンノニアの知事を務めた。彼の執筆活動はギリシア語でなされ，セプティミウス･セウェルス帝治世に同帝の夢と前兆を扱った作品に始まった。その後，193年の内乱を扱った作品を執筆中に計画を拡大して建国から229年までを対象とする《ローマ史》の著述に心血を注いだ。
